Every year ELA
hosts a number of events, such as
speakers on current issues, career panels, and networking
opportunities.
While the agenda varies, there are certain annual events:
General
Meetings
ELA holds a General
Body Meeting at least once a
semester to plan and organize for upcoming events and to discuss ELA
activities.
Whitewater
Rafting Trip
At the beginning of
every school year, a group of
students
trek out to Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania for a rafting trip down a portion of
the Youghiogheny River. Breakfast and lunch is provided, along
with several hours of excellent rafting. The trip is a great
opportunity
to get out of the city and to meet some different people. The
rafting trip this year will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2009.
Young
Alumni & Career Panel
During the fall
semester, GW co-hosts a career panel
with the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Section of the DC
Bar. This panel provides insight to students on the variety
of
jobs available in the environmental field. This is a great
networking event for students and is always well attended.
Early in the spring
semester, when students are
looking for summer or graduate employment, ELA hosts a career panel
to help inform students of the employment opportunities available
to GW students. This panel is a great chance to meet young practioners
in the environmental field, many of whom are GW alumni, to ask
questions, and to network with lawyers from a variety of employers,
including private firms, non-profit organizations, and government
agencies.
Meet
the Professors
In time for spring
registration period, ELA holds
our annual Meet the Professors night. It is an opportunity to meet some
of our environmental law faculty and to learn about the
many environmental law courses GW offers each year.
Hiking
and Camping Trip
ELA celebrates the
end of the school year by
getting out of DC and heading for the mountains. A day of hiking
is followed by grilling and camping. In May 2008 and May 2009, small
groups
hiked and camped in Shenandoah National Park, while the year
before we hiked into Harper's Ferry, WV and spent the night
in a private campsite.
