About
HLSA
Almost half of the 257 Hispanic law students in Washington, DC attend The George Washington
University Law School, and
HLSA is proud to be the Law School’s only student organization geared towards furthering the participation of
Hispanics in the legal profession. The group has recently been revamped, with a
focus on support and synergy. HLSA emphasizes its role as a vital resource for students,
while heightening awareness of the issues affecting the Hispanic population.
HLSA encourages its members to join professional organizations and to do pro bono work. One
focus is the D.C. Employment Justice Center's Workers’ Rights Clinic, where students help low-income workers with
employment issues. Many of the Clinic’s clients only speak Spanish, so HLSA also sees
this as an opportunity for members to gain valuable legal experience while strengthening
their language skills. Immigrant workers’ rights are particularly vulnerable, and HLSA is
stepping forward to protect them.
HLSA’s senior membership is committed to help first-year members
manage their time, succeed academically and explore career opportunities. Along with
its well known mentoring program, HLSA organizes case-briefing and outlining sessions,
as well as a resume workshop - which brought over 10 participating attorneys from various practice
areas to campus last year. HLSA also connects students with area employers through participation in HNBA and HBA-DC;
and, it helps members seize diversity scholarship and fellowship opportunities.
HLSA also sponsors several social events each year. All students are welcome to
participate in HLSA, especially those who have an interest in furthering the participation of
Hispanics and Latinos in the legal profession.
Finally, HLSA’s annual speaking engagement this last year brought Chief Justice Edward L.
Chavez of the New Mexico Supreme Court to present ‘Latinos in the Law.’
By collaborating with GW Alumni and Faculty, HLSA has
taken an active role in recruiting Hispanic students and professors; members have
pursued new scholarship opportunities, and have petitioned for and met with prospective
Hispanic professors. The group is also committed to starting a Hispanic law journal at
GW.
HLSA is proud to have Professor Arturo
Carillo as its faculty advisor.
